MARTIN JONES "attention to detail bordering on obsession"

Our golden eared designer, Martin Jones, joined Sonique in 1994 he is also responsible for Sonique's quality control.
Marty is an accomplished musician that since his early days has been in bands, playing Guitar, Bass and Vocals.
He has held a life long interest in Electronics and attended Kilkenny Technical College studying Electronics and Radio in the late 70s.
It was no mistake that Marty's interest in electronics and passion for music led him to Sonique.
But it was Marty's attention to detail, almost bordering on obsessional, that was a perfect fit with Sonique's philosophy in the manufacture of our hand built speakers and Micrex amplifiers.
This combined with Marty's unique combination of technical expertise and aural judgment has made him a valuable member of the Sonique research and development team.
Marty is also involved in a recording studio (using Sonique reference monitors) and does live sound engineering for Coma (www.coma.au), Vincents Chair (www.kathiernner.com) and Bluestone (Electric Blues Outfit).
Which he finds is an excellent way to keep his ears in tune with the real world , while being involved in such a wide genre of live music helps with the development of real-sounding 'uncoloured' speakers.
Greg is a founder of Sonique Audio, is Sonique’s Project Manager, and he loves his work. In his words every Sonique product designed must go beyond just pure listening pleasure, it must also be a product of exceptional quality at an affordable price based on solid technical performance, each individually hand crafted to a standard that anybody would be proud to own.
Greg grew up and was educated in Australia, his working career beginning in the United Kingdom in the field of underwater acoustics, more specifically in the Research and Development of advanced Navy Frigate and Submarine Sonar equipment; the theory of which applies very well to advanced speaker design. This was applied in his early days at Duntech Audio, where he was responsible for the Research and Development of some of the worlds most advanced and most respected speakers.
As one of the founders of Sonique, Greg’s technical slant remains critically important in keeping Sonique at the forefront of speaker design. He maintains a second development laboratory at his home that duplicates the facilities at Sonique so he can perform measurements and development at any time . now that really is passion!
But Greg’s goal is not technical performance, although it forms the basis for accurate sound reproduction, it is also the passion and realism that results in your listening pleasure that he searches for. When you listen to a Sonique system you are transported - whether it is 2-channel stereo or a full blown home theatre system … you are there !
Sonique is a family concern in more ways than convention suggests with Sara Lund being an integral partner in the business with her husband Steve and a dedicated team of people who happily and unconsciously foster a 'family' atmosphere.
Sara has been a part of Sonique story since its inception though her introduction to sound technology was during her pre-Sonique days when she owned and managed a successful hair dressing salon with a sound system she describes as a "very ordinary sound system".
Sara's primary love is live music and while she has a definite penchant for 70s recorded sounds, her music collection is actually quite extensive. She is as passionate about music so it's not surprising Sara's favourite combination of Sonique products is slanted heavily towards "excellence in hi-fi music: "The gear must be exceptional to let you listen to music for hours on end," she says of her current preference, the
Sonique D Series 750SE speakers, Micrex amplifiers (and source). It's a system that in her words delivers “spooky reality”.
"Sara is obsessive about Sonique too," says husband Steve. "About keeping our customers satisfied."
Sara's desire to ensure that owners are totally happy with Sonique products and the service they receive, is matched by her thorough knowledge of all Sonique products and activities.
The people at Sonique pride themselves on being multi-skilled and Sara also contributes an often-missing element to the processes in the audio business ... and that is a alternate, often different perspectives on the way Sonique products are developed.
Working within the engineering parameters that provide consistent high quality sound in Sonique speakers, Sara has ensured that optimum aesthetics are applied to each model and that each speaker meets a variety of important decor-oriented householder selection criteria ... Sara simply likes to call this the "wife acceptance factor”.
Sara is happy to talk to you about selecting or living with Sonique sound and you can
email her any time.
Steve is your main contact at Sonique and he is happy to look after all your enquiries because, basically, he is as passionate about his relationship with you (essentially his business), as he is about his passion for sound quality (music and movies) and these are the very things that created Sonique Audio in the first place.
Steve's 'passion for sound quality' started in the late 60s and is due largely to his heavy involvement with Duntech in the exciting early days of this forward-looking company. Today the passion is not only a major part of his life it's more an "obsession", as his wife Sara will confirm ... this and "any thing to do with motor vehicles going fast".
Equipment auditioning sessions at Duntech using recorded music as the source awoke in Steve the special emotion that can only be created by high quality sound reproduction. It opened his eyes to high quality speakers with accurate sound reproduction and set his mind to the business of creating speaker systems capable of superb sound quality across a wide cross section of the market.
These times made Steve realise that he had to be involved in the industry that created this opportunity for enjoyment in everyone (and, in some small corner of Steve's mind, the hitherto dormant seed of Sonique germinated).
In 1980 Steve joined Duntech as production manager and so began a journey to produce the best speakers they could (a few years later Duntech was reputed to be producing the 'world’s most accurate speaker)'.
This journey with Duntech continued for more than 12 years, during which time Steve set up the US operation for the company and managed the Australian side of the business.
Steve remembers his first 'encounter of a hi-fi kind’; his "first serious hi-fi system". It was as a teenager in the mid-70s and by today’s standards it was very "ordinary" (to be polite), but Steve has since kept pace with developments in audio as it has evolved.
He now indulges his passion on a daily basis with his favourite: a the full 7.1 channel set-up using his acclaimed
Sonique Diamond 550 system with
Sonique-Boom Subwoofers (and if you think that name is bad, his other subwoofer is called the
'Thunderbox' ... groan!).
Steve is "amazed by the sound quality" of the Diamond 550 system and believes it provides the ideal combination of speakers for music reproduction and home cinema sound applications. Considering he can choose to use any model from the range that's an interesting topic to
discuss on our forums or
chat about online.
Steve’s electronic and management background combined ideally with his experience in the audio industry and created the opportunity to regularly travel. This let Steve listen to best the rest of the audio-video world has to offer and continually update his listening repertoire, "educate his ears" and, equally, share his personal experiences in sound. He would then return to Australia and strive to do everything better and smarter.
Steve appreciates the positive feedback he receives (and there's a lot of it) from happy owners of Sonique products and also values constructive input. "Ultimately," he says, "every hour of every day someone, somewhere in the world, is appreciating the very special sound created by speakers made by a small talented group of very passionate designers in Adelaide, Australia. That brings a smile to my face."
